I found my nearly 15 year old PC speaker setup at home and brought it to work and hooked it up to my computer and after fiddling with some Dell sound card and eq settings it sounds AMAZEBALLS in the Parts Department.

GIS photo for reference. Even though its from a non-smoking home, mine’s a bit yellower in appearance :/

Had that exact set sixteen years ago. I think one of the tweeters developed a wire problem and I *know* the volume control got crummed up.

The volume control is sketchy, I might have to take it apart and see what can be done about it.

I used these speakers to abuse my neighbors in college.

There’s some chemical in the plastic that makes it yellow over time. A ton of 80s and 90s beigeboxes suffer from this issue.

Oh yeah. I had a set of those for years and gave them to my CAP squadron, a decision I immediately regretted. Thankfully I found another set at, where else, the Goodwill Outlet. Despite having multiple sets of speakers around the house, these are still my favourites, with an amazing quantity of quality sound from such a small set.

I had the 4.1 version of that set. The speaker wires were disturbingly good at picking up radio signals and the stands were crappy and broke all over the place.

I still have my Altec Lansing kicker and speakers and they sound great, at least to a hearing damaged Marine...

15 years, and several moves, homes, and PCs later and have had neither issue.

Not to mention they weren’t stored properly so I am amazed they all even work still.

With mine, if you aligned the cables the wrong way, suddenly you had radio (I don’t think I ever bothered to track down the station) playing fairly clearly over them. With some fiddling I could quiet it down, but I never got things total quiet.

Replaced mine with a Logitech Z560 set at some point in the early 2000s, and was very happy with the improvement (though certainly a much bigger pain to move around):

Parents still using mine. Volume control crapped out but I replaced it with a line-in cable with a volume control dial.

Edited to add, I’m still using a Cambridge Soundsworks SW310 from 2001. I had 2, but a cat chewed through a bunch of cables and I managed to salvage one working set from what was left. Volume control cable also conked out on this one.

Holy crap - I have that exact same set. I have it in my basement and plug-in either my iPhone or laptop to crank some tunes off of Spotify. They still sound really good after all these years.

I have that set, and I have moved it from PC to PC as I’ve upgraded over the years. And I can confirm that in some places I lived it picked up FM amazingly effectively.

Despite that, the setup does sound pretty good for what they are, and a still rocks my computer desk after 18 years.

Oh man, those speakers were (are) awesome. When I was younger, I bought the Caimbridge Soundworks 4.1. They were awesome.

It can totally be fixed with a combination of Oxyclean and hydrogen peroxide and UV light. It sounds odd, but it works. They call it Retrobright: http://www.mountainouswords.com/mountain-air/retr0bright-restoration-project/
